Creative Tech Lab Jamaica
Creative Tech Lab Context
The launch of this Creative Technology Lab (CTL), an innovative initiative led by the Inter-American Development Bank's Competitiveness, Technology and Innovation (CTI) Department, marks a milestone in the Caribbean region. This ambitious project aims to bring together a diverse group of people, carefully selected for their expertise and potential, from the dynamic nations of the Bahamas, Jamaica, Suriname and Guyana.
Thinking beyond the traditional mold, this CTL aims to transcend conventional boundaries by combining the talents of developers - including coders and web designers - with the creative brilliance of artists, especially musicians. These creatives and developers will embark on a mission to address one of the most pressing issues facing musicians today: fair compensation and effective monetization of their intellectual property. The goal is not only to highlight the immense potential of the fusion of technology and creativity, but also to underscore the profound impact that such interdisciplinary initiatives can have on the positive evolution of the Caribbean's cultural and economic landscape. By fostering innovation, encouraging collaboration and addressing the critical challenges facing the music industry, the CTL initiative stands as a beacon of progress and opportunity, inspiring future generations to harness the power of creativity and technology for the greater good.
Creative Tech Lab Audience
All creatives (specially musicians) and developers in Jamaica.
Creative Tech Lab Methodology
The Creative Tech Lab is a workshop that hosts creative entrepreneurs and technologists (such as software developers) to collaborate on developing new technologies that address artists’ compensation and industry cooperation. At the end of the workshop, teams will demo their prototypes and make recommendations for improving such prototypes to take to market. Three teams will be formed. Each team will tackle a pre-defined issue or challenge in the music industry in Jamaica. Teams will be formulated through self-selection and consist of the following members: four musicians, two industry experts (with expertise on the administrative elements of intellectual property and the music industry), and two to three technologists. The lab includes participation in specifically designed workshops on intellectual property commercialization, work with the technologists to develop the prototypes and to provide feedback on the feasibility of the technologies, and the opportunity to meet with mentors and other industry professionals. At the end of the Creative Tech Lab, the teams (which include the artists) will present the outputs to stakeholders.
